These oak and walnut library steps were commissioned to reach a specified height. The twisted pillar was designed such that the steps all meet the same face squareley as it twists. The pillar twists 180 degrees over two metres. The pillar was cut and shaped to produce a square cross section along its length. This square section twist in timber is very unusual and accomplishing it took a lot of experimenting and developing but was ultimately very successful. The twisted form is very tactile and invites the user to feel and engage with the steps.
